Background: Since being established in 1997 by Alistair McLaren, the Practice has
developed a significant portfolio of projects ranging from a modest garden room with
attic conversion in Blackhall to a 5 storey development of 34 flats in Leith. Although both
large and small residential projects predominate, many commercial projects have also
been undertaken including a car showroom refurbishment. The latest project to be
undertaken by the Practice is the conversion of a redundant 60's office block into student
residences with 59 study bedrooms and support facilities, which will be leased to
Edinburgh University.

Practice: The Practice is small but has an effective capability through the application
of IT and established quality procedures. It is technically proficient with a cost conscious
approach to all projects undertaken. Although the current workload is confined to
residential and commercial work, Alistair McLaren can call on a broad experience
accumulated over 30 years in the following sectors:

As a member of ECAN, which is a local, self-help, networking group of sole proprietor
Architectural practices, further expertise can be accessed. Architects within this group
unite occasionally to form project-specific teams for larger developments.

McLaren Associates also collaborates closely with an independent consultancy which
offers Planning Supervisor and IT Services.

Product: The Practice aims to produce cost effective, sustainable solutions with
